Program Overview
The Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) represents the highest level of youth soccer competition and player development in Ontario.
As the province’s standards-based development environment, OPDL is designed for players who demonstrate the ability, commitment, and ambition to compete at an elite level and pursue advanced opportunities within the game. For more information from Ontario Soccer, please click here.
For Waterloo United, OPDL serves as the pinnacle of the youth development pathway, providing athletes with access to the highest level of coaching, training, competition, performance support, and player development resources offered by the club.
High-Performance Development
The OPDL environment is designed to help players reach their full potential both on and off the field.
The program places a strong emphasis on developing:
- Technical and tactical ability
- Consistent training habits
- Discipline and accountability
- Resilience
- Character
- The ability to succeed in high-performance environments
Players are supported through an elevated development environment designed to challenge them and prepare them for advanced opportunities within the game.
OPDL Trials
There are three phases of OPDL trials throughout the recruitment period. A brief overview is provided below. Players and families should review the full OPDL Trial Guidelines for complete details.
OPDL trials are held in three phases:
- Phase 1: September 8 – October 15
For players who are not currently on an OPDL team. Current OPDL players cannot trial with another club during this phase. - Phase 2: October 21 – February 22
Open to players from any club. Current OPDL players may require a release before trialing elsewhere. - Phase 3: February 23 – April 4
Open or invitation-based trials, as needed, to complete team rosters.

OPDL is not only an important development opportunity for individual players. It also strengthens the broader Waterloo United player pathway and soccer community.
The program helps:
- Provide aspiring athletes with a local high-performance pathway
